Young journalists writing about lifestyle in Philadelphia

Holly Martin has been in broadcast journalism for over five years. You can catch her on the radio in Philly and Atlantic City. She loves the fall, and all things spooky. When she’s not in Philadelphia, Holly spends most of her time on the beach. She will be graduating in May of 2019, but plans attend Temple University for her master’s program.

Daryl Matthews has been in broadcasting for several years. Originally from Philly, he is the host of a segment called “The Feed,” an entertainment social media segment on Philadelphia Neighborhoods On TV, which is in it’s 4 episode. His ideal goal job is to work on E T.v as an entertainment reporter and anchor. He will be graduating in May of 2018.

Brian Maiorana has been interested in Journalism since 2010 when reading gaming magazines and thinking “I can do that”. Though since that time, he’s only dabbled in a personal blog and a Youtube channel. With his love for games, he wishes to find work as a reviewer once he’s finished with school. He hopes to graduate in May of 2018.

Current Coverage of Lifestyle in Philadelphia:

Philadelphia has a handful of magazines that cover different lifestyle topics. There are also many bloggers that introduce fun stories about living in Philly and what is going on. After I looked at some of the blogs, it was apparent that they weren’t very popular or just starting out. It looks like our group has chose the perfect time to start this beat. The magazines have been covering Philadelphia’s lifestyle and culture for awhile now, but bloggers have only just begun, and so have we!

Why this topic needs more coverage:

There is coverage of Philly lifestyle, but nothing really stands out. We are hoping to highlight some of the best parts of Philly to emphasize all the different lifestyles that make up the city. From the alternative scene of South Street’s The Strange and Unusual Oddities Parlor and Crash Bang Boom to the traditional South Philly Italian market, there are places to go and things to learn that readers can adapt into their lifestyles.

We’re the right people to cover this because…

We all have different lifestyles, and that helps us create a variety of different story ideas to cover. We each plan to cover a variety of different lifestyle topics that will create diverse and interesting content for our readers. I love the fall season as well as all the Halloween activities. I anticipate covering a variety of Halloween topics during the fall season, and then switch gears to other holidays after October.

Three interesting ideas we hope to explore:

Philadelphia has so much to offer from events and attractions to history tours and museums. One of the places I would like to explore is the Edgar Allan Poe house. Edgar Allan Poe lived in Philadelphia for a period of his life, and his former residence is now a museum where you can walk around and learn about this famous poet. Another Lifestyle topic I would like to dive into is about which seasonal holiday activities do families like to enjoy within the city. From the Macy’s window display to the Christmas Village at city hall, there are plenty of ways to enjoy your seasonal time in Philly! Maybe even find out where to buy the best hot chocolate. The last topic I would like to investigate would be how stores find out which product is going to be the “it” item of the season. What will it be this year? How can people get the hot item first? How do stores handle the high demand? So many questions, and I hope to get all the answers! Lifestyle in the City of Brotherly Love varies from neighborhood to neighborhood, and there is so much to explore. My group and I hope we can introduce a few new fun people, places, and things into your life!
